My Mobile WFH Setup: Overview

This is an overview of the core hardware and audio tools I rely on to maintain a professional workspace while traveling and working remotely.

Hardware

I need powerful, reliable, and portable gear that can handle a full day of coding and meetings.

  • Computer: MacBook Pro with a M1 Pro CPU, running macOS 26.1 Tahoe.
  • Microphone: Zoom H1essential Handy Recorder. I chose this device for its compact size and high-quality recording capability.
  • Headset: Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 Bone Conduction Headset. This style allows me to stay aware of my surroundings and talk to my family easily, while still hearing meeting audio clearly.

Software & Routing

To achieve professional-grade audio in noisy environments, I rely on advanced routing and DAW processing.

  • Virtual Audio Routing: Loopback by Rogue Amoeba. I use this essential tool to create virtual audio interfaces, allowing me to route signals seamlessly and deal with annoying audio-rate differences between devices.
  • Mic Processing Engine: Bitwig Studio. This serves as my primary DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for real-time, low-latency processing of my microphone signal.
  • Output Management: SoundSource by Rogue Amoeba. I use this application to manage and apply processing effects directly to specific audio outputs. It provides generally useful utility functions, while also acting as a plugin host for more advanced processing.

Audio Plugin Chains (The Secret Sauce)

This is the core of how I defeat background noise and ensure a clear, consistent sound.

Microphone Input Chain

My standard microphone signal chain is built for noise reduction, clarity, and presence:

  • Noise Reduction: Supertone Clear (for real-time ambient noise removal).
  • Vocal Shaping: SSL Native Vocalstrip 2 (for EQ, dynamics, and tone).
  • Alternatively, for complex environmental issues, I substitute Vocalstrip with:
    • iZotope Neutron 3 Gate
    • FabFilter Pro-Q4 for EQ
    • FabFilter Pro-C2 for compression
    • Final Loudness: The signal then runs through Ozone 9 Maximizer and TDR Limiter 6 GE for final level optimization and clipping prevention.

Audio Output Chain

This chain ensures incoming meeting audio is clear, stable, and easy to hear:

  • EQ & Clarity: FabFilter Pro-Q4.
  • Compression/Leveling: Klevgrand Korvpressor.
  • Limiting: TDR Limiter 6 GE.
  • I occasionally apply Vocalstrip processing to individual meeting applications for specific clarity needs.

I will be providing detailed reviews and real-world experiences for all the hardware and software listed above, including alternatives I’ve tested on the road.
